Faro: Golden Cliffs and the Authentic Algarve

The Algarve has two faces. One is the resorts and golf courses, the gated communities and cocktail bars. The other — the one that truly matters — is the golden cliffs dropping into the Atlantic, sea caves that look like cathedrals carved by the ocean, fishing villages where sardines still dry in the sun, and hidden beaches reachable only on foot.

Faro, the Algarve's capital, is the gateway to all of this. It is not the most touristy city in the region, and that is precisely what makes it the most interesting.

Faro Old Town: Walls and Azulejos

The Cidade Velha hides behind medieval walls. Enter through the Arco da Vila, a neoclassical gate built on Arab foundations, and suddenly the city noise vanishes. Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with azulejo frames, and the thirteenth-century cathedral with views of the lagoon and sea from its tower.

Local tip: Faro's Municipal Market is perfect for breakfast: coffee with a freshly baked pastel de nata and Algarve orange juice.

Caves and Cliffs: Europe's Most Spectacular Coast

The Algarve coast between Lagos and Albufeira features some of the continent's most impressive coastal scenery. Must-sees include the Benagil cave, Ponta da Piedade in Lagos, Praia de Marinha and Algar Seco in Carvoeiro.

Ria Formosa: The Algarve's Natural Paradise

A sixty-kilometre natural park of lagoons, salt marshes and barrier islands stretching along Faro's coast. Home to flamingos, seahorses and hundreds of migratory bird species.

Lagos and Sagres: The End of the World

At the western tip, Lagos offers medieval walls, dramatic cliff beaches and a lively marina. Sagres and Cape São Vicente mark continental Europe's southwesternmost point.

Algarve Gastronomy: Seafood and Cataplana

Essentials: cataplana (seafood stew in a copper pot), grilled sardines, barnacles from Sagres, and Dom Rodrigo (almond and egg sweet).

Practical Tips

  • Best time: May to October. September is ideal: warm water, fewer crowds, lower prices.
  • Getting around: A rental car is essential for exploring the coast and interior.
  • Budget: A cataplana for two costs 25-35 euros. Grilled sardines, 8-12 euros.
  • Don't leave without: Watching a sunset from Cape São Vicente — continental Europe's last sunset.
