Florence has a problem: it is so beautiful that it is overwhelming. Every corner hides a masterpiece, every square takes your breath away. But if you only have one day, you need a plan that blends the essential with the unexpected.
Early morning: the Duomo before anyone else
Arrive around 8:00 at the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Brunelleschi's dome, 45 metres across, remains one of the greatest feats of engineering. The combined ticket costs EUR 30 and includes the Baptistery, Giotto's Bell Tower and the crypt. Stop at Scudieri for a cappuccino and cornetto (EUR 3.50).
Mid-morning: the Uffizi without the crowds
Buy tickets online (EUR 20 high season), enter at 9:30. Focus on Botticelli's Primavera and Birth of Venus, Leonardo's Annunciation, Michelangelo's Tondo Doni. The Florentine Renaissance experience adds stories and context that transform the visit.
Lunch: eating like a Florentine
Trattoria Mario (Via Rosina 2): ribollita EUR 6, bistecca alla fiorentina EUR 45 for two. No reservations. Or the Mercato Centrale first floor for lampredotto (EUR 5), pasta and gelato. After lunch: Ponte Vecchio
Cross the medieval bridge lined with jewellers since the 16th century. The Corridoio Vasariano above has recently reopened (EUR 20 with reservation).
Afternoon: the Oltrarno
Start at Piazza Santo Spirito. The Brunelleschi basilica costs EUR 2. The Rebel Florence experience uncovers artisan workshops. Stroll Via Maggio and visit Bottega di Giuliano Ricchi for traditional leatherwork.
Sunset: Piazzale Michelangelo
20 minutes walk from the Oltrarno. Bring Chianti (EUR 8-12) and arrive 30 minutes before sunset. The Florence at Sunset experience combines viewpoints with Tuscan wine tastings.
Dinner
Il Latini (Via dei Palchetti 6) or Trattoria Sabatino (Via Pisana 2, primo piatto EUR 6). End with a Negroni (invented in Florence) at Volume on Piazza Santo Spirito. The perfect day
This itinerary balances culture, gastronomy and neighbourhood life. From the Duomo to the Oltrarno, from the Renaissance to today. A day you will not forget.
