Close your day with a meditative walk across the Ponts Couverts and the panoramic terrace of the Barrage Vauban, watching Strasbourg bathed in golden sunset light.
About this activity
The Ponts Couverts are three medieval bridges flanked by four 14th-century defensive towers crossing the Ill river at the entrance to Petite France. At sunset, the grazing light draws dramatic shadows on the towers and the canals turn golden. From there, walk 200 metres to the Barrage Vauban, a 17th-century military structure whose free panoramic terrace offers the best sunset view: converging canals, the Ponts Couverts towers, the cathedral spire against a pink sky. Inside the dam, a gallery of medieval cathedral sculptures adds an unexpected cultural bonus. The perfect slow ending: nature, architecture, history and beauty converging where the only clock that matters is the sun descending.
