Immerse yourself in France's oldest botanical collection, a university garden where plants from five continents grow in Victorian greenhouses and historic parterres.
About this activity
The University of Strasbourg Botanical Garden, founded in 1619, is one of France's oldest and a secret few tourists know. With 3.5 hectares in the city centre, it houses over 6,000 species in thematic collections: medicinal plants, alpine flora, tropical species in 19th-century iron-and-glass greenhouses, and a fern collection that transports you to the Jurassic era. The tropical greenhouse with its enveloping humidity and palm trees touching the glass ceiling is a perfect refuge. The arboretum with century-old sequoias and cedars offers generous shade. Entry is free and the garden is usually empty on weekday afternoons.
