Cultural Nice: Museums and Walks between Art and Sea is a curated one-day experience in Niza with 5 activities: Matisse Museum, Marc Chagall National Museum, MAMAC - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Palais Lascaris and 1 more. Estimated duration: 8h. Price range: Free.

### The artistic soul of the Riviera

Nice has been a magnet for artists from around the world for centuries. The unique Mediterranean light, bouncing between the Alps and the sea, created a natural laboratory where painters like Matisse, Chagall, Renoir and Dufy found their definitive inspiration. This cultural experience immerses you in five spaces representing different facets of the city's artistic heritage, from classical painting to the most provocative contemporary art.

### From Cimiez to the center: an artistic axis

The itinerary begins on Cimiez hill, the residential neighborhood where Matisse lived his final years and where today the museum bearing his name is preserved. From there, the route descends toward the city center, passing through the Marc Chagall National Museum — one of Europe's most important monographic museums — and MAMAC, the epicenter of contemporary art on the Riviera. The Palais Lascaris, a baroque jewel hidden in the heart of Vieux Nice, offers a fascinating historical counterpoint. And the Cimiez Monastery closes the circle with its contemplative garden and sacred art collection.

### More than museums: a sensory experience

Each of these spaces offers more than paintings on walls. The Matisse Museum is surrounded by Cimiez's olive gardens, where the artist himself walked every morning. The Chagall Museum was specifically designed to house the Biblical Message, with stained glass flooding the rooms with color. MAMAC has a rooftop terrace with panoramic city views. The Palais Lascaris preserves one of Europe's most beautiful historical pharmacies. And the monastery houses Matisse's remains in its cemetery, poetically closing the journey.

### Practical tips

The Nice Museum Pass (72 hours, 28 euros) gives unlimited access to all municipal museums, including four of the five on this route. The Chagall Museum is national with separate admission (10 euros). Most museums close Mondays, so plan your visit Tuesday through Sunday. Public transport (tramway line 1) perfectly connects Cimiez with the center.

Nice is not just beaches and Promenade des Anglais: the capital of the Côte d'Azur hides an artistic richness that rivals Paris. From Matisse and Chagall's masterpieces to MAMAC's contemporary art, through the baroque elegance of Palais Lascaris, this cultural experience covers five spaces where art dialogues with Mediterranean light. Each museum tells a different story: Matisse's fascination with southern France's colors, Chagall's luminous spirituality, European artistic avant-garde, 17th-century Genoese opulence and the monastic serenity of Cimiez. A full-day journey that transforms a Nice visit into a voyage through centuries of artistic creation, with the Baie des Anges always in the background.

Matisse Museum

### The Genoese villa that captivated Matisse The Matisse Museum occupies the Villa des Arènes, an elegant 17th-century Genoese residence painted in Pompeian red and surrounded by olive gardens in the Cimiez park. Henri Matisse arrived in Nice in 1917, drawn by the Mediterranean light, and never left. For 37 years, the city was his home and studio, and this hilltop became his creative refuge. ### An intimate and revealing collection Unlike large national museums, the Matisse Museum offers an intimate experience. The permanent collection includes over 200 paintings, 150 drawings, 70 sculptures and the famous gouaches découpées (cut-out papers) that marked the artist's final period. Works like 'Nature morte aux grenades' (1947) and 'Nu bleu IV' (1952) show the radical evolution of an artist who never stopped experimenting. The villa's rooms are organized chronologically, allowing visitors to follow Matisse's journey from post-impressionism to the lyrical abstraction of his later years. ### The surroundings as a work of art What makes this museum special is not just what's inside, but what's outside. The Cimiez olive gardens, where Matisse walked every morning, extend to the Roman ruins of Cemenelum. From the museum terrace, you can see the entire Bay of Nice — the same view that appears in dozens of his paintings. It's one of those places where art and landscape merge inseparably. ### Practical information The museum opens Wednesday to Monday, 10:00 to 17:00 (18:00 in summer). Entry is free with the Museum Pass or costs 10 euros individually. Easily reached by bus 15, 17 or 20 from the center. Combine with the Cimiez Monastery, just 200 meters away.

Marc Chagall National Museum

### A museum conceived as a total work of art The Marc Chagall National Museum is no conventional museum. It was conceived by the artist himself alongside architect André Hermant as a total work of art, where architecture, natural light and artworks integrate into a meditative space. Opened in 1973 with Chagall still alive at 86, it is the only French national museum created for a living contemporary artist. ### The Biblical Message The museum's centerpiece is the Biblical Message series: 17 large canvases painted between 1954 and 1967 depicting scenes from Genesis, Exodus and the Song of Songs. Chagall donated these works to the French State as a message of universal peace. The colors — deep blues, vibrant reds, luminous greens — create an atmosphere between the earthly and celestial. ### Stained glass and contemplative spaces Beyond the canvases, the museum houses three monumental stained-glass windows in the concert hall representing the Creation of the World. The light filtering through these blue glass panels bathes the room in an ethereal glow. Outside, a Chagall mosaic reflects in a pond, and a sculpture garden completes the sensory experience. ### Beyond the permanent collection The museum hosts top-tier temporary exhibitions and regular concerts. Open daily except Tuesdays, 10:00 to 17:00 (18:00 May to October). Admission: 10 euros.

MAMAC - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

### The bridge between Europe and America MAMAC opened in 1990 with a clear mission: to bridge European and American avant-gardes of the second half of the 20th century. Its collection revolves around the Nice School (Yves Klein, Arman, Ben, Martial Raysse) and American Pop Art (Warhol, Lichtenstein, Wesselmann). ### Yves Klein, Nice's native son The undisputed star of MAMAC is Yves Klein, born in Nice in 1928. The museum holds an exceptional collection including monochromes in his famous International Klein Blue, anthropometries and sponges. The Klein room is an almost mystical experience. ### A building that's part of the experience Designed by architects Yves Bayard and Henri Vidal, the MAMAC building is itself an artistic statement. Four towers connected by glass walkways create a play of transparencies. The rooftop terraces offer 360-degree panoramic views of Nice. ### Temporary exhibitions MAMAC hosts three to four major temporary exhibitions yearly. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-18:00. Free entry with Museum Pass.

Palais Lascaris

### A Genoese palace in the heart of Vieux Nice Hidden among the narrow, colorful lanes of Vieux Nice, where laundry hangs between balconies and the smell of socca mixes with salty air, lies one of the Riviera's least-known architectural treasures. Palais Lascaris was built between 1648 and 1700 by the Lascaris-Vintimille family, descendants of the Byzantine emperors of Nicaea. ### The breathtaking staircase Nothing prepares visitors for what lies beyond the threshold. The monumental staircase is a baroque masterpiece with trompe-l'oeil frescoes creating illusions of classical architecture. ### The noble halls and pharmacy Upper floors house halls with Flemish tapestries, period furniture and a collection of over 500 antique musical instruments. The ground floor holds a reconstituted 18th-century pharmacy with original furnishings. ### Practical information Rue Droite 15, Vieux Nice. Wednesday to Monday, 10:00-18:00. Free entry.

Cimiez Monastery

### Nine centuries of history on a hilltop The Monastère Notre-Dame de l'Assomption de Cimiez dates back to the 9th century when Benedictine monks established their community here. Later, in the 16th century, Franciscans expanded it and created the gardens that are now among Nice's most pleasant walks. The monastery stands above the ruins of ancient Roman Cemenelum. ### The church and Louis Bréa altarpieces The Gothic church houses three masterful altarpieces by Louis Bréa, the most important painter of the 15th-century Nice school. The Pietà (1475), the Crucifixion (1512) and the Deposition anticipate the Italian Renaissance. ### Gardens and cemetery Italian-style gardens feature rose gardens, geometric parterres and wisteria pergolas. The terraces offer one of Nice's finest views. The adjacent cemetery is the resting place of Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy. ### An oasis of silence Free access. Gardens open all day; church and museum 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00.
