Turin is one of Europe's most underrated cultural capitals, a city where every corner hides centuries of history from the Roman Empire to Italian unification. Capital of the Duchy of Savoy and the first capital of unified Italy in 1861, this Piedmontese city witnessed the most decisive moments in Italian history.
### An incomparable royal legacy
The Savoy dynasty left Turin an architectural heritage rivalling the great European capitals. The Palazzo Reale, official royal residence for over three centuries, is just the gateway to a UNESCO World Heritage system of residences. From state rooms to royal gardens, every space conveys the power and sophistication of a court that dominated northern Italy.
### World-class museums
The Museo Egizio, second in importance only to Cairo's, houses over 40,000 pieces documenting European fascination with ancient Egypt. The Mole Antonelliana, the city's most iconic building, contains the National Cinema Museum. And Palazzo Madama offers an art journey from the Middle Ages through the Baroque.
### The religious and spiritual imprint
The Duomo di San Giovanni Battista guards one of Christianity's most enigmatic relics: the Holy Shroud. This linen cloth, said to have wrapped Christ's body, draws millions of pilgrims and curious visitors alike.
Turin was unified Italy's first capital and seat of the powerful Savoy dynasty for centuries. This legacy left an extraordinary concentration of palaces, museums and monuments making the city one of northern Italy's most complete cultural experiences.
This experience takes you through Turin's five essential cultural treasures. Start at the majestic Palazzo Reale, the Savoy royal residence and UNESCO site, then dive into the Museo Egizio's millennia-old collections. The iconic Mole Antonelliana awaits with its Cinema Museum and panoramic views from 85 metres. In the afternoon, the Duomo reveals the Holy Shroud mystery, and Palazzo Madama unfolds history from Roman foundations to Baroque art.

Turin Cathedral and the Holy Shroud
The Duomo di San Giovanni Battista is Turin's only Renaissance church and guards the Holy Shroud, the linen cloth tradition identifies as Christ's burial shroud. ### Cathedral history Built 1491-1498 by Meo del Caprina in Tuscan Renaissance style, unique in baroque-dominated Piedmont. The bell tower was completed by Filippo Juvarra in 1720. ### Chapel of the Shroud Guarino Guarini's masterpiece (1668-1694), a circular chapel in black marble with a spiralling dome, reopened after 20 years of restoration following the 1997 fire. ### The Holy Shroud A 4.41 x 1.13 metre linen cloth showing a crucified man's image. Public exhibitions occur every ~25 years (last 2015, 2M visitors). A full-size replica and multimedia museum are always accessible. ### Practical info Piazza San Giovanni. Free entry. Palazzo Madama: From Roman Castle to Art Museum
Palazzo Madama is arguably Turin's most architecturally fascinating building, reading 2,000 years of city history in one monument. At the centre of Piazza Castello, it began as a Roman gate in the 1st century AD, became a medieval castle, and was crowned in 1718 with Filippo Juvarra's spectacular baroque façade. ### Layers of history The visit is like a vertical archaeological dig. Roman foundations of the Porta Decumana survive underground. Medieval towers date from the 13th-15th centuries. The Two Royal Madamas transformed the castle into an elegant baroque residence. ### Civic Museum of Ancient Art Since 1934, housing exceptional collections from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, including Antonello da Messina's Portrait of a Man. ### Practical info Piazza Castello. Wednesday to Monday, 10:00-18:00. Entry ~10€. Ground floor free.
