Strasbourg: Canals, Tarte Flambée and Alsatian Charm
Strasbourg looks almost invented. Half-timbered houses with flowers on every balcony, canals reflecting impossible rooftops, a pink sandstone cathedral that changes colour with the light. If it didn't exist, you would have to draw it.
But Strasbourg is far more than a postcard. It is the capital of Alsace, seat of the European Parliament, and a city that has spent centuries bridging two cultures — French and German. That dual identity shows in everything, from architecture to gastronomy, and it is what makes the city irresistible.
Petite France: The Quarter That Stopped Time
The Petite France district is Strasbourg's most photographed corner, and rightly so. This former quarter of tanners, millers and fishermen is a living watercolour: half-timbered houses from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, red geraniums in every window, canals with locks regulating the river Ill.
Local tip: Cross the Ponts Couverts and climb to the Barrage Vauban terrace for the best panorama of Petite France. It is free and there are few queues. The Cathedral: Pink Sandstone and Medieval Clockwork
The Cathédrale Notre-Dame took four centuries to build (1015-1439) and was the world's tallest building for over two hundred years. Its western facade is a symphony of Gothic sculptures carved in pink Vosges sandstone that changes tone throughout the day.
Inside, the astronomical clock performs its parade of apostles daily at 12:30.
Winstubs and Tarte Flambée: Alsatian Gastronomy
Winstubs are Alsace's traditional restaurants: cosy atmosphere, chequered tablecloths, dark wood ceilings and a menu that is a monument to Central European heartiness with French elegance. Essentials include tarte flambée, choucroute garnie, baeckeoffe and kugelhopf.
The Grande Île: World Heritage
Strasbourg's historic centre occupies a river island surrounded by the arms of the Ill. It was the first urban centre declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1988).
